A Day in Konstanz
June 13 2019
I awoke today with a sore throat and cough- the beginnings of a cold. There are few things worse than a holiday cold, one being a holiday cold in a foreign country. We had breakfast at the hotel buffet (tasty!) and trundled out to find medicine for sick boy. Soothing cough drops and numbing dayquill were not on offer. Their replacements were suspiciously weak. We plowed on with our plan for the day: exploring old Konstanz.
We headed into the middle of the city, walking through warrens of little streets with quaint old buildings. My sore knee and cold-drained endurance made it slow going, but we found benches to sit on and watch the people and admire the buildings. As we got further into things, the spires of a church and a cathedral towered over the houses.
Rhine River
We continued north through the city until we came to the Rhine River, which forms here in Konstanz from the Bodensee. The river flows mostly north, through Germany and empties into the North Sea.
Return to Camp
By this time, I was limping along, coughing and sunburnt (generally pitiful), so we turned back toward our hotel for some shade and rest. We stopped by the City Park on the way, a restful place with shade trees and benches! We cooled ourselves with some ice cream, then trekked back to our room for naps.
After our nap, we splurged on a nice meal at a seafood restaurant the concierge recommended. It was delightful.
Tomorrow, we leave the Bodensee and ride an antique railroad.
